As the community educator for the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, I witnessed how soothing and regulating nature can be for kids.
This inspired me to take therapy sessions outdoors, meeting children on trails or in parks. During our time together, we discuss life's challenges, personal goals, and what we are grateful for, then pause to admire the birds and natural wonders. This break naturally calms and refocuses the mind before returning to conversation. By integrating mindfulness and birdwatching into therapy, children can explore both their inner and outer worlds while building empathy and confidence.
Therapy is tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual and can vary significantly from person to person. I often combine different modalities to create a varied and dynamic therapeutic experience. This might involve a skate session, a walk around a lake, or, on days when outdoor activities aren't suitable, remote or art-based sessions in my Denver office.
